Manufacturing Process of Spinning Tops

Spinning tops have been played with in various parts of Japan for a long time. However, the number of spinning top shops has dwindled, and those who have experienced playing with spinning tops have become scarce.

We want to preserve the spinning top culture. We aim to create opportunities for people to experience spinning tops. With that in mind, we started a new approach to toy-making by combining the traditional craftsmanship of spinning tops with modern 3D processing technology.

We strive to create nostalgic yet innovative toys that appeal to people of all generations, allowing everyone to enjoy a childlike sense of wonder.

Our toys, designed to highlight the natural beauty of wood and adorned with auspicious colors, add a playful touch to any room.

Educational toys for young children are made with Kyushu-grown wood and safe vegetable-based paint. We pay special attention to eliminating dangerous edges and ensuring sizes and shapes that eliminate the risk of accidental ingestion.

For babies, it's safe to touch or even put in their mouths! At Kumamoto Koma, we create toys for children aged 0 to 2 using the warmth, wood grain, and colors of domestically sourced natural wood, providing toys that children can enjoy. We use finishing coatings such as Osmo Color and those from the German company, Livos, which are environmentally friendly coatings based on natural wood oils. Developed about 30 years ago in Germany, these coatings allow the wood grain to breathe, resulting in a beautiful finish. They comply with food hygiene tests and saliva dissolving tests, proving their safety, allowing parents to confidently give these toys to babies and children.

At our workshop, we carefully handcraft each toy. Please feel the warmth of the wood when you hold them.

Livos Coating from Germany Livos is the leading natural paint manufacturer in Germany, being one of the first in the world to produce natural paints. Livos sources materials for its coatings from contract farms that cultivate plants for Livos coatings using pesticide-free and organic farming practices. Their coatings primarily consist of linseed oil and natural beeswax, cultivated through organic and pesticide-free methods, ensuring food-grade safety. Furthermore, during manufacturing, they avoid the use of heat, high pressure, or chemicals to preserve the vitamins in the oils. Livos coatings are made from plant-based oils and natural ingredients, free from harmful chemicals (air pollutants, health hazardous substances, environmental hormones), offering healthy and safe coatings. They have been recognized in reputable eco-tests within Germany as the safest coatings available.

Osmo Color Coating from Germany Osmo Color is a natural coating made from natural plant oils (sunflower oil, soybean oil, and thistle oil) and vegetable waxes. It contains no harmful substances like insecticides or preservatives, avoiding the use of citrus oils or benzoles. It has passed the IN53160 saliva dissolving test and meets the standards of the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare's Notification No. 20 (material tests for food containers and materials) and No. 257 (elution tests for materials). Its high safety standards, equivalent to food-grade safety, make it safe to touch and ensure a pleasant feeling of wood, being environmentally friendly and safe for both humans and nature.
